A Legals Only Ceremony gives you the simplicity of a registry office wedding, with the freedom to choose where, when and how your ceremony takes place.
You can get married at home, in a park, beside the harbour, on a beach or at another meaningful location across Sydney. Your ceremony can be as relaxed and low-key as you like, while still meeting all the legal requirements for marriage in Australia.
There is no need for an expensive venue, elaborate styling or a long guest list. It can simply be the two of you, your two witnesses and me, your authorised marriage celebrant.
What Is a Registry-Style Wedding?
A registry-style wedding is a short civil marriage ceremony focused on completing the legal requirements of getting married.
It is similar to booking a ceremony through the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, but instead of attending the Registry, I come to a location you choose.
Your ceremony includes the legally required wording, your legal marriage vows and the signing of your marriage certificates. I take care of the paperwork, guide you through each step and register your marriage with NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages following the ceremony.
It is simple, official and legally recognised, without needing to organise a traditional wedding.
Your Ceremony Can Take Place Almost Anywhere
One of the biggest advantages of choosing an independent marriage celebrant is the freedom to select your own setting.
You might choose:
- Your lounge room or around the kitchen bench
- Your backyard, balcony or apartment
- A local park or garden
- A quiet beach
- A Sydney Harbour lookout
- Your hotel or holiday accommodation
- A private dining room or restaurant
- A location that has personal meaning to you both
For a very small ceremony without furniture or styling, many public locations can be used without making a formal venue booking. Some parks and locations have their own restrictions, so I can help you understand what may apply to the setting you are considering.
More Choice of Dates and Times
Registry office weddings are generally offered at set venues and during specific appointment times.
With a Legals Only Ceremony, you have much greater flexibility. Depending on my availability, ceremonies can be held:
- On weekdays or weekends
- In the morning, afternoon or evening
- At sunrise or around sunset
- At a time that suits your work or family commitments
- Before a lunch, dinner or celebration with your guests
This can be particularly helpful if you want to get married on a meaningful date, need a ceremony outside standard business hours or would prefer a quiet time at a popular Sydney location.
Registry Office or Private Celebrant?
Both options result in a legal marriage, but a private celebrant gives you more freedom to create the experience around your preferences.
Simple Does Not Have to Feel Impersonal
A short ceremony can still feel warm, happy and completely right for you.
You are welcome to keep it to the legal minimum, which generally takes around five to eight minutes. If you would like to add a little more, you can also include:
- An exchange of rings
- Personal vows
- Personalised Pronouncement
- Joined by family members and friends
There is no pressure to include traditional wedding elements that do not feel like you. You can dress formally, arrive together, wear something casual or head straight out for lunch afterwards.
Your marriage is no less meaningful because the ceremony is simple.
A Cost-Effective Way to Get Married
You will need:
- Two people who are legally eligible to marry
- A completed Notice of Intended Marriage
- The required identity documents
- Two witnesses who are over 18 years of age
- An authorised marriage celebrant
Please note: I do allow for more than two people to be present for the ceremony.
In most circumstances, your Notice of Intended Marriage must be received by your celebrant at least one calendar month before the ceremony.
If you do not have anyone available to act as witnesses, I may also be able to arrange witnesses for an additional fee.
Who Chooses a Legals Only Ceremony?
A registry-style ceremony can be perfect for couples who:
- Want to get married without having a large wedding
- Prefer something private and relaxed
- Are saving for a home, holiday or another priority
- Are planning a larger celebration later
- Have already held a wedding or cultural ceremony overseas
- Want to complete the Australian legal marriage requirements
- Are visiting Sydney and would like to marry while they are here
- Want a small elopement with only a few guests
- Simply do not enjoy being the centre of attention
There is no right or wrong way to get married. If a short and uncomplicated ceremony feels right for you, that is more than enough.
