The Royal Botanic Garden is one of Sydney’s most iconic and versatile ceremony locations. With expansive gardens, harbour views, towering fig trees, colourful seasonal displays and quiet hidden corners, it offers an incredible range of beautiful locations for couples wanting a simple legal wedding ceremony.
Unlike many people imagine, there isn’t just one place to marry within the Gardens. There are dozens of stunning locations, each with its own atmosphere, outlook and level of privacy. Whether you love harbour views, lush gardens or peaceful tree-lined lawns, there is usually a perfect spot waiting for you.
For simple legal ceremonies with no furniture or styling, the Gardens are one of my favourite places to marry couples.
Choosing Your Ceremony Location
One of the biggest advantages of the Royal Botanic Garden is flexibility.
Rather than asking couples to choose an exact location months in advance, I usually recommend exploring the Gardens when you arrive and choosing the spot that feels right on the day. The Gardens change constantly with the seasons, the weather, maintenance work and the number of visitors, so having flexibility often results in a far better experience.
Some couples fall in love with sweeping harbour views, while others discover a quiet tree-lined lawn they hadn’t expected. Because we’re only holding a simple legal ceremony, we can usually move freely between suitable locations.
Areas within The Botanic Gardens
The Harbour View Lawns
Many couples are drawn to the open lawns overlooking Sydney Harbour and the Harbour Bridge. These locations combine beautiful greenery with one of the world’s most recognisable skylines, creating photographs that instantly feel like Sydney.
There are several different harbour-facing lawns throughout the Gardens, each offering slightly different views and levels of privacy.
The Herb Garden
The Herb Garden is one of the Garden’s best known ceremony locations. With manicured hedges, sandstone pathways and colourful planting, it creates a classic formal garden atmosphere while still being close to the harbour.
Because it is a designated wedding location, it can occasionally host larger booked ceremonies, so availability varies throughout the day.
Fig Trees & Hidden Garden Spaces
Some of the most beautiful ceremonies I’ve performed haven’t been at famous locations at all.
Throughout the Gardens are magnificent Moreton Bay figs, shaded lawns, quiet pathways and secluded garden spaces that offer complete privacy away from the busier harbour areas.
These locations are ideal for couples wanting a peaceful ceremony surrounded by nature.
The Palace Rose Garden
When the roses are in bloom, this is one of the most colourful parts of the Gardens. Beautiful hedges, flowering roses and formal landscaping create a timeless backdrop that feels romantic throughout the year.
It is particularly lovely during spring and early summer.
Why the Royal Botanic Garden Works So Well
One of the reasons I love performing ceremonies in the Royal Botanic Garden is the flexibility it offers. Rather than being limited to a single ceremony site, we have an enormous garden to explore.
If one area happens to be busy, we can simply walk a few minutes to somewhere quieter. If the light is better elsewhere, or you discover a beautiful spot while wandering through the Gardens, we can often hold your ceremony there instead.
The Gardens are one of Sydney’s most visited attractions, so you’ll likely see tourists, joggers and photographers throughout the day. Fortunately, they’re also incredibly spacious, meaning it’s usually easy to find a peaceful location for a simple legal ceremony. Weekday mornings are generally the quietest time to visit.

Getting There
The Royal Botanic Garden is easily accessed from Sydney CBD, Circular Quay and Martin Place, with multiple entrances depending on where you’d like your ceremony to take place.
Nearby parking stations, taxis and public transport make it convenient for both couples and guests, although some walking is usually involved once inside the Gardens. Comfortable footwear is always recommended while exploring the different ceremony locations.
My biggest piece of advice is not to worry about choosing one exact spot months in advance. Arrive a little early, enjoy a walk together, and we’ll choose the location that looks its best on the day.
