Positioned beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge and directly opposite the Opera House, Hickson Reserve offers one of Sydney’s most impressive settings for an intimate legal wedding ceremony.
A Quintessential Sydney Harbour Location
Hickson Reserve is a grassy foreshore park located beside Dawes Point and the Park Hyatt Sydney. From the lawn, you can enjoy sweeping views across Circular Quay, with the Sydney Opera House directly across the water and the Harbour Bridge towering overhead.
It is a wonderful choice for couples wanting an unmistakably Sydney ceremony without leaving the city. The open lawn works particularly well for elopements, small legal weddings and relaxed ceremonies with a handful of guests.
A Busy but Beautiful Public Space
Hickson Reserve sits beside one of Sydney Harbour’s main foreshore paths, so walkers, runners, tourists and photographers pass through throughout the day. It is also very popular on weekends.
A completely private ceremony cannot be guaranteed, but choosing a weekday, early morning or quieter time of day can create a more relaxed experience. For a simple legal ceremony, we can usually move slightly along the lawn to find a free spot.
The Harbour-Facing Lawn
The lawn overlooking the harbour provides the clearest view of the Sydney Opera House and allows the Harbour Bridge to appear prominently in your photographs.
Depending on the position of the sun and activity within the reserve, we can choose a spot that gives you the best possible background while keeping some distance from the main pedestrian path.
Beneath the Harbour Bridge
Standing closer to the Dawes Point side places you almost directly beneath the Harbour Bridge. This creates a dramatic city backdrop and is a lovely option for couples who want the bridge to be the strongest feature in their ceremony photographs.
The sandstone walls, mature trees and nearby historic buildings also provide several additional photography options after the ceremony.
Weather, Shade and Accessibility
The reserve is open and exposed, with limited shade and no permanent undercover area. On warm days, morning or late-afternoon ceremonies are generally more comfortable. A wet-weather alternative should also be considered, particularly when rain or strong winds are forecast.
The lawn is reasonably easy to access from The Rocks, Circular Quay and nearby hotels. Some surrounding streets are steep, and parking can be limited, so public transport, taxis or rideshare services are often the easiest options for guests.
