Rushcutters Bay Park is one of Sydney’s most convenient spots for a simple legal wedding or elopement ceremony. Just minutes from the CBD and Kings Cross, this harbourfront park offers wide open lawns, shaded fig trees and views across the water to the moored yachts of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. These are outdoor, public spots best suited to just the two of you and your witnesses, or a small group of family and friends, in and out within about fifteen minutes and with no tables, chairs or arbour required.

You can stand under the shade of century-old fig trees, out on the open lawns with the harbour and yacht masts as your backdrop, or tucked into a quieter corner of the foreshore path. Every spot works well for a quick, unfussed legal ceremony, no bookings or setup needed, with plenty of nearby cafes for a celebratory coffee straight after you sign.
Recommended Spots Within Rushcutters Bay Park
The Waterfront Lawn
The grassy area beside the harbour is my preferred spot for a simple wedding ceremony at Rushcutters Bay. It offers beautiful views across the water, with yachts and the marina creating a relaxed harbourside backdrop.
There are several places to stand along this section of the park, so we can choose the prettiest and quietest position available when we arrive. It works particularly well for an intimate ceremony with just your witnesses or a small group of family and friends.
The Shaded Parkland
The lawns beneath the park’s mature trees provide a softer, greener setting with plenty of natural shade. This is a lovely alternative on a warm or particularly sunny day and can feel a little more secluded than standing directly beside the waterfront.
The trees, open grass and glimpses of the harbour create a relaxed parkland backdrop while still making the ceremony feel distinctly Sydney.
Beside the Harbour Seawall
There are also several grassy areas close to the seawall and foreshore pathway where you can stand with the water immediately behind you. This provides a clear view across Rushcutters Bay and the many yachts moored throughout the harbour.
As this is also a popular walking route, I recommend choosing the exact position when we arrive rather than relying on one specific spot being available.
Areas to Avoid
Reg Bartley Oval is a fenced sporting field and is not the area I recommend for a ceremony. I also would not plan to hold the ceremony immediately outside the Cruising Yacht Club or within the marina facilities, as these sit beyond the main public lawns and are generally much busier.
The open parkland between Waratah Street, New Beach Road and the harbour provides the easiest and most attractive options for a simple legal wedding.
Good to Know
Rushcutters Bay Park is a public harbourside park, so your ceremony area cannot be reserved or guaranteed to be completely private. It is popular with walkers, runners, families and dog owners, particularly during weekends and later in the afternoon.
For the quietest experience, I recommend a weekday or an earlier ceremony. We can select the best available position once we arrive, taking into account other park users, sporting activities, the weather and the direction of the light.
A simple legal ceremony with no chairs, tables, arbour or styling is ideal for this location. The ceremony itself takes approximately fifteen minutes, allowing you to enjoy the harbour setting without needing a formal event setup.
Public toilets and a café are available within the park. Dogs are also permitted off-leash during designated hours, so couples who would prefer fewer dogs nearby may wish to avoid those times.
Parking & Getting There
Time-limited street parking is available around Rushcutters Bay Park, including along Waratah Street, Bayswater Road and New Beach Road. Parking can be limited, particularly on weekends, so I recommend allowing additional time to find a space and walk into the park.
The park is also accessible by public transport. Edgecliff Station is the closest train station, followed by a downhill walk towards the harbour. Buses operate along Bayswater Road and New South Head Road.
When confirming your ceremony details, it is best to share your location once you have arrived at the park. I can then meet you at your chosen waterfront or shaded lawn area.
